Lilacs are a medium-sized flowering shrub with fragrant lilac flowers in early summer. Hardy, adaptable and easy to grow, they can make an informal hedge, be planted with other shrubs as a garden boundary, or be used as specimens. If trimming is required they should be cut back after flowering. If they grow too tall, older stems can be cut back to ground level which will encourage new shoots. Do this regularly to keep the plants in shape. Plant in full sun or light shade in moist but well-drained soil. Nicely established plants 30-50 cms tall in 2-3 litre container.
