Mespilus germanica 'Brabant Giant'

Price: €19.95

A very ancient fruit tree, popular in mideaval and Roman times, which bears an unusual fruit which is ready to eat in winter. It has large, attractive and ornamental flowers in spring. The fruit needs to be 'bletted' (ie very ripe, squishy and almost rotten) before it is edible. The fruit are quite unique and were once considered to be among the finest of delicacies, reserved for those who could afford them. The trees can be planted in most garden soils but prefer a sheltered spot, out of strong winds to prevent the flowers from being damaged - this will reduce the harvest of fruit. The trees can eventually grow to approximately 4.5 metres tall. 5 litre container, 100-125 cms tall plants.
