The 'Dog rose' or Briar rose is a native hedgerow rose of Ireland. The Dog rose has delicately scented pink flowers (sometimes white) in mid summer and red hips in the autumn, as well as sharp thorns year round, making it useful as part of a prickly barrier hedge. Plant with a mix of other hedgerow species such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Elder. Flowers appeal to bees and butterflies, while the hips can be eaten by birds or used by us in jellys and preserves. Tolerant of a wide variety of soils except very wet or very dry. Berries or 'hips' are used for making a jelly or adding pectin to jams.
