A large and very impressive conifer which, unusually for a conifer, is deciduous. Also unusually, and similar to a Dawn redwood (Metasequoia), it can grow well in damp or even wet soil, though the ideal situation is adjacent to a pond where it will eventually develop 'knees' - woody stumps which appear, from the roots, around the plant. There are some fine examples, including a number planted along the canal in Portobello, Dublin 8. Only suitable for larger gardens, as these trees can grow very tall. Although exceptionally hardy, shelter from strong winds, as cold easterly winds in spring can damage new growth. Wonderful autumn colour, and beautiful new foliage also in spring. 7.5 litre container / 15-175 cms tall.
