The smaller and less common of our native cherries. The Bird cherry is on the Irish State's official 'Red List' of threatened species: it used to be found wild in 28 counties in Ireland and is now only found in 9. The white flowers differ from most other cherries in that they are held on cylindrical spikes. The small dark berries are very bitter, but most attractive to birds, who quickly eat them and distribute the seeds. Fast-growing medium-sized tree up to 10 metres in height. Suitable for well-drained or poor soil, but not in very exposed sites or in exposed coastal locations. Ideal as a component in part of a mixed native hedge or native woodland margin.
