Miscanthus sinensis is a tall, clump forming grass native to China and Japan. The variety 'Malepartus' has silky, red-brown feathery flowers in late summer and autumn, and bronze-tinted leaves. This grass should be planted in drifts in amongst tall perennials or at the back of a border. It is tolerant of many soils, but prefers fertile, well-drained soil. You can cut the plant down almost to ground level in the winter or early spring, being careful not to cut into any new shoots. Mulch with well-rotted manure, garden compost of bark mulch. Can grow to over 1.5 m tall. Photographed here in early October in Co Dublin. 2-3ft tall plants grown in Co. Limerick. 2 litre container, not in flower yet. Please note, items displayed on this website may not be available in each of our shops.
