A wild variety of the 'garden pear', which is a good hedgerow or boundary tree, or also a fine specimen tree. Not native to Ireland, but to central and eastern Europe, it grows well here. Attractive white flowers in spring, edible fruit in summer and excellent Autumn colour. It makes a very useful wildlife tree, provide flowers for bees and fruit for birds, as well as many insects on the foliage which also provides food for birds. The timber is useful for chopping boards and kitchen implements. Long lived - can grow up to 12 metres in height.
