charles-brady-1926-1997-bottle
Charles Brady (1926-1997), Bottle

Increasingly one of Ireland's most revered 'minimalist' late 20th century artists, Charles Brady was American born, but lived the bulk of his life in south Dublin, sharing a studio for a time in DunLaoghaire with fellow American painter George Potter. Moving from New York in the late 1950s, he stated that his ambition was to sell his work to "ordinary people", and that his small paintings "would fit into living rooms or bedrooms". Due to a shortage of money and unable to afford canvas or painting boards, he freqently painted on old scraps of paper from phone books or remnants of boards. In terms of subject matter he was similarly frugal. Subjects included everyday items such as envelopes, tissues, bottles, toilet rolls, tickets and so on.

His humble subject matter, modest size and basic materials are ultimately what has elevated him to the high status in which he is held today. Like the work of the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), the focus on household objects has given his work a somewhat meditative quality. His work is instantly recognisable, using pale, subdued pallets, broad brushstrokes and somewhat hazy lines.

This piece is very much an archetypal piece ofhis work, similar in palette and subject matter to his early 1970s pieces, A Morandi Bottle or Bowl. A strong horizontal line and play of light and shade is typical of his work. He showed at the RHA in Dublin and sold his work through the Taylor Galleries. His work is now in the ollections of the National Gallery of Ireland, Irish Museum of Modern art (IMMA) and the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. Charles Brady's work is highly collectable, as can be seen from high prices fetched at auctions in recent years.

25 x 30cm excluding frame and mount.
