John Luke R.U.A. (1906-1975), Late summer, still life
John Luke is an intruiging figure in Irish 20th century art. Known for his superb draughtsmanship and technique, his work almost always has a surreal quality and is instantly recognisable. Having trained in the Slade school in London, and exhibited ion London too, he returned to Belfast in the 1930s and remained for the rest of his life in Northern Ireland. After his death there have been retrospective exhibitions of his work in Dublin and Belfast
This still life demonstrates his skill as a draughtsman as well as his interest in shape and form.
