Louise Cherry, Sea Sanity VIII
Paintings in Louise Cherry's Sea Sanity series are, in her own words, 'created to excite and challenge' with their investigation of painting and deconstructing layer after layer of paint. Sea Sanity VIII is certainly this: a joyful, multi-layered response to nature at a time when it was needed to heal and restore 'sanity'.
Painted during a period of recovery from a broken leg, when she was prescribed regular swimming by her doctor. Louise, who lives beside the sea in Wicklow, found this daily contact with the sea, right in the middle of lockdown, to be inspiring, calming and stabilising. It was also a time for her to focus on her painting and to create a series of paintings that she has titled 'Sea Sanity'. As she says in her own words, 'in these paintings I want people to feel what I experience while in the sea, to feel as though they are also diving in, to feel fresh, happy and free...'
Louise runs a gallery in Wicklow Town, operates an art space dedicated to the enjoyment and education of art for children, and has lecturered on photography at Dunlaoghaire Institute of Art, Design and technology (IADT).
