Medlars are an old-fashioned fruit, cultivated since Roman times in Europe. The fruit is generally harvested in winter, preferably after frost when they are deemed more edible, a process known as 'bletting'. Large, white rose-like flowers in May and June are attractive to bees, followed by fruits which should be left on the tree until after the first frost. Medlars are small, bushy trees, with good autumn colour. Best in a bright location in most soils. 'Brabant Giant' produces larger fruit than most varieties up to 5cm in diameter. Plants are 50-60cm tall, in a 5 litre pot. Irish grown plants.
