Myrtus ugni / Ugni molinae / Chilean guava / Ugni fruit
An unusual little evergreen shrub, native to Chile. Pretty, small nodding white flowers in spring and early summer are followed by berries in late summer and autumn. These berries are the most special feature of this plant, because they are very delicious. Fragrant, somewhat strawberry flavoured but with a touch of bubbblegum, about the size of a blueberry, they were Queen Victoria's favourite fruit. They're now popular amongst chefs and for those who want a 'foraging garden' or want to incorporate edibles into their landscapes. Best in sun or light shade in somewhat moist, acidic soil. Sold in a 3 litre container. Irish grown plants 40-50cm tall
