This is an unusual and charming painting from the 1940s. It depicts a group of children playing cards beside a grassy verge. From an era when photography might have been an easier method of capturing such a scene, it has the air of a book illustration, though it is painted in oils. Wonderfully atmospheric, from the clothing and footwear to the haircuts and the perambulator, as well as the cottage in the background, it captures the essence of another era. The well-dressed children could be just home from school. Is this countryside, or somewhere on the transition from rural to urban?

Tom Lalor was caricaturist and commercial artist whose work was a regular feature in the Independent and Leader in the between the 1910s and the 1930s.

Oil on canvas, 33 x 43cm. Framed under glass.
