A heated 'poker' was used to carve the outlines. The wood is then stained \/ paintedThe background textures are hand-gouged, with some test patches on the reverse of one disc. The craft of 'pokerwork' (known as Pyrology in the United States) was at its peak in Britain and Ireland from the 1900s to the early years of the 1910s. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis well-preserved pair are plainly inspired by the Art Nouveau movement that emanated from France at the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth century.
