Adam and Eve in Paradise, Francesco Bartolozzi

Adam and Eve in Paradise. Georgian etching / engraving, depicting the innocent couple enjoying their time in 'paradise'. Interestingly, the work of a piece such as this had mutiple artists, including one for the peple and another for the landscape, all based on an original painting by Francesco Bartolozzi.

The work has its original edition details on the back, which at one point would have been attached to the drawing, along with a portion of text from Milton's Paradise Lost:

"London, Pub July 1 1794 by Darling & Thompson Gt Newport Street and T Simpson, St Pauls Church Yard."

A framer's label on the reverse, 'Samuel Jennings, Carver, Gilder & Printseller, London'  dates the framing of this piece to the mid to late 19th century. Samuel Jennings operated between 1850 to 1885. The presence of this sticker means that the piece was re-glazed, re-backed, repaired or simply re-sold in Jennings' workshop during this period. As the label says, he was a 'Printseller' as well as a carver and gilder. He no doubt applied his sticker to what is clearly an older, Georgian era 'Hogarth' frame from the 1790s.

In good condition, considering the age of this piece (it dates from 1794).
