Alicia Boyle RBA, RHA (1908-1997), The Swing
Alicia Boyle produced paintings over many decades and exhibited widely in her lifetime. Born in Thaliland, brought up in Northern Ireland, she spent much of her life in the UK, moving to Ireland in the early 1970s. She exhibited frequentlyat the Royal Academy in London, at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in the 1950s, the Society of British Artists, as well a commercial galleries in London. Her work is now in numerous collections, including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Crawford Art Gallery, the Ulster Museum, as well as many institutions in the UK.
Her distinctive colour choices and the flow of her brushstokes make her work instantly recognisable. She captures movement and light with apparent ease. Her work often has a little more to it than meets the eye. This painting depicts a small copse of trees, with a home-made swing hanging from one branch. This is separated from the viewer by traces of a wire fence, adding another dimension to the scene.
Dimensions (excluding frame) 33 x 43cm. Originally purchased from her studio sale, deVere's Auctioneers, September 1998. Newly reframed with solid wood frame and non-reflective, UV protecting glass.
