Rugged landscape with tall pine trees, nestled in a valley with rugged mountains and cliffs in the background. Golden early evening light filters through trees and rests of mountain tops.
Celia Culverwell was born into a well-off and well educated Dublin family, and seemed to specialise in dreamy, beautifully executed watercolours that capture natural landscapes and trees. Growing up on North Great George's Street, and later on Lower Lesson Street, she was well positioned to keep abreast of the artistic scene in Dublin at the end of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.
This is the 2nd piece of work by her that we have found, depicting what could be a mountainous part of Europe, or possibly Scotland. Like many well-off artists from that period, sketching and drawing holidays were likely part of her experience. She exhibited in Dublin and London during her lifetime.
Drawing dimensions 36 x 52cm. Watercolour on paper. Signed and dated (1897) bottom right. Newly reframed in original frame, with acid free mount and backing in UV protective, low-reflection glass.
Artworks can be viewed and purchased in our Clare Street shop. Overseas shipping is available on request.
