Flora Mitchell (1890-1973), Duke Street

Mid 20th century ink and watercolour drawing of Duke Street in Dublin city centre, just off Grafton Street. The clothes, vehicles and street architecture capture another era.

Flora Mitchell is best remembered for drawings just like this, architecturally accurate and detailed, whilst also atmospheric. A collection of her drawings were reproduced as a book, Vanishing Dublin, in 1966. Many of her works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, which held an exhibition of her work in 1999.

This particular drawing is interesting and quite unique. She captured this exact scene more than once, with just a couple of small changes. It would appear that in this version she mis-spelt 'The Bailey', leading her to do it again with the correct spelling. As a drawing, the colours are vibrant and the details are wonderful. In fact, this drawing has not been displayed and framed up until now, meaning that it is extremely vivid and in excellent condition.

Based on the signed and dated version of this drawing, it is from 1955.
