A view down Islington Avenue in Sandycove towards the tip of Howth Head. Painted in Potter's characteristic crisp pallette, this work manages to capture detail with the broadest of strokes. Light and shadows play across the road, whereas the sea is a solid block of a vibrant blue. Light clouds cross the sky, and two thin phone or electrical wires seemingly connect the two halves of the painting.
George Pottter was an American-born painter who lived in Ireland from 1971 until his death in 2017. Much of his output dealt with his immediate surroundings, and indeed this scene is only a few minutes walk from his nearby home and studio. He was a member of the RHA and exhibited with them regularly. He had solo shows with the Taylor Galleries.
