A smallholding at the base of an imposing mountain. A lone man in the foreground feeds his chickens, accompanied by a dog. Clothes or bedlinen flap on the line. It's a hard life, and this a fairly uncompromising picture of it.

John Robert Keitley Duff was a London-born artist who specialised in landscapes that often included birds and animals. He studued at the Slade school of fine art, and went on to publish a book, Pastel: A manual for beginners. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and elsewhere.
