An etching depicting the 'Valley of the Itchen' by Irish-born artist Robert Charles Goff. Goff was born in Ireland into an Anglo-Irish family, fought in the Crimean War, was made a Colonel, and subsequently lived the rest of his life in the UK, Italy and Switzerland. He married a European aristocrat and died in Switzerland in 1922. He was an accomplished etcher and engraver who was much influenced by James McNeil Whistler. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Socity of Painters, Etchers and Engravers in 1887. The Fine Art Society held an exhibition of his work in London in 1912. This particular piece is listed in the catalogue for that exhibition.

This minimalist work shows the Valley of The Itchen in Hampshire, rich in wildlife and botanic detail. Gallery label on reverse from Taylor & Brown, Glasgow. Text reads: 'Osier Bed, Itchen Abbas. by Colonel R. Goff'.
