Expansive landscape painting, showing Glenveagh Castle, Co Donegal, as well as the wider waterways and mountains. Skillful capturing of light and movement by one of the acknowledged masters of the of the Northern and Western landscapes of Ireland. From a small boat in the foreground the eye is led through the water to the impressive 19th Century castle as the base of the mountains.
Rowland Hill was born in Belfast in 1919. By the age of 16 he had three oil paintings hung at the annual show of the Ulster Academy or Arts. Encouraged by the older artist James Humber Craig, he went on to exhibit in London, Toronto and Dublin, where he exhibited 17 pieces between 1935 and 1966. He was elected an assocaite of the Royal Ulster Academy in 1964.
