Portrait of the poet and playwright W.B. Yeats by English artist William Rothenstein. Rothenstein was a war artist, landscape painter and portraitist, who is best remembered now for his portarits of intellectuals and artists. He was the principal of the Royal College of Art in London from 1920 to 1935. He was knighted in 1931 for his services to art. Many of his pieces are now in collections of the Tate Gallery and the National Portriat Gallery, London.

This lithograph was made in 1898 when Yeats was just 23. Yeats continued to use this image as the frontispiece for many of his later Collected Works. Rothenstein produced a number of these hand-signed lithographs, copies of which are now in the Hugh Lane Gallery, The Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, London.

44 x 27cm. Signed and dated in the plate, [18]98. Also signed in pencil bottom right. In original frame with 'W. ISLE' sticker on the reverse.
