Anonymous, Innisfallen Lakes, Killarney
All the components of the 'Romantic' landscape: a solitary figure, wind-blown trees, steeples in the distance, majestic nature as the backdrop, an idyllic resting place on the shore. Ireland, like the rest of Europe, had its 'Romantic' movement towards the end of the 18th century / early 19th century. The Irish landscape becomes the setting for ruins, storm clouds, and pastoral idyll. Some art historians consider this to be one of the high points in Irish art history.
This little painting is showing its age. It and its frame are somewhat decrepit, 'consistent with age'.
Unsigned. Oil on board. 15 x 11cm.
