18th Century, Innisfallen Lakes, Killarney
All the components of the 'Romantic' landscape: a solitary figure, wind-blown trees, steeples in the distance, majestic nature as the backdrop, an idyllic resting place on the shore. Ireland, like the rest of Europe, had its 'Romantic' movement towards the end of this century. The Irish landscape - which is able to compete against the best of them in terms of beauty - becomes the setting for ruins, storm clouds, dreamers. Some art historians consider this to be one of the high points of Irish art history.
This little painting is showing its age: it and its frame are somewhat decrepit. On the other hand, this adds to the charm. The condition is not terrible - just 'consistent with age'. It could be cleaned and restored, varnished and housed in a fancy new frame, (which is fairly beat up). We took the decision to keep it as it is. The decision of how to treat it is up to the buyer.
Unsigned. Oil on board. 15 x 11cm.
