Activated carbon pellets (sometimes known as activated charcoal) is used to filter chemicals, mould, metals and other nasties that you don't want in your terrarium or houseplant compost. In a terrarium, add a layer above the drainage layer, or mix some into your houseplant compost when potting up. Mixed in with your potting mix, it increases aeration, improves drainage and helps prevent mould or odours.  When charcoal is 'activated'  it is treated to high temperatures, causing it to expand. This creates tiny air pockets, which create the basis for filtration and elimination of salts, bacteria, moulds etc. 3 litre ziplock bags. C
