The daughter of the poet W.B. Yeats, Anne Yeats was born into Dublin's artistic milieu. Her grandfather was the great portraitist John B.Yeats and her uncle the painter Jack B. Yeats. Like many female artists, fame and recognition came slower and harder than it did to their brothers, husbands and fathers. She studied at the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin. She worked for many years in the Abbey Theatre as a set designer, becoming head of design in 1939. From the 1940s she worked with many Irish poets and writers as an illustrator and designer.
Her work is in the collections of many notable institutions, including The National Gallery of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Gallery and Trinity College collection..
This beautifully pared back 'wind study' is reminiscent of the work of fellow artist Louis Le Brocquy, with whom she collaborated. Grassy verticals are topped by tiny seed-heads, as if quivering in their quantity.
