West of Ireland landscape depicting a thatched cottage by the water's edge. Dramatic mountains across the water in the distance, with trees, dry stone walls and a small road leading to the cottage. Meticulously depicted in wool, embroidered on linen. The work is labelled 'THE BLUE LAKE' on the reverse (see final photo), but is unsigned.
This work has many of the hallmarks of the'Celtic Revival' depictions of western Ireland from the 1920s and 1930s, embodied by the Cuala press and Paul Henry: a thatched cottage with its distinctive gable; dry stone wall and stylised trees; the dramatic moutains in the background.
The work was actually made from a template supplied by Patons & Baldwins, and there are a couple of existing examples still in existence from this template, of which we have two. The art form is described in their manual as 'Needle-painting in Beehive Crewel Wools'.
In terms of design, no designer is credited. It was most likely designed in-house by Patons and Balwins, who did a remarkable job of showcasing the colours, textures and nuances of colour and texture that can be produced with wool. It's also a captivavting, large-scale landscape that depicts a western landscape in its most idealised form.
Dimensions 48 x 85cm, excluding frame. Newly framed with non-reflective UV protective glass.
Artworks can be viewed and purchased in our Clare Street shop. If ordered online, delivery is €20.00 nationwide (Ireland). Overseas shipping is available on request.
