Anonymous, West of Ireland landscape
Early 20th century wool and linen embroidery, depicting a west of Ireland landscape. Made with great flair and artistry, with the direction of the thread indiciating cloud and rain, light and shadow. Reminiscent of the landscape painting of Paul Henry (1877 - 1958) in its minalism and composition.
We don't know who made this piece. Almost certainly it was a woman. The piece is in the original frame (1920s / 1930s) with the Victor Waddington Gallery label on the reverse (restored by us and with new UV protective glass). Possibly it is the work of Susan "Lily' Yeats, or a member of her circle. The only writing on the piece is the word 'woolwork' which is most likely a framer's note.
