Arthur Armstrong RHA (1924-1996), Connemara Mountains
Arthur Armstrong was a northern Irish artist, a friend and contemporary of fellow artists such as Gerard Dillon, Daniel O'Neill and George Campbell. He spent the 1950s in London, moving to Dublin in the early 1960s. He showed regularly with the RHA from 1962 and regularly designed posters for the Abbey Theatre. He taught part time in the National College of Art and Design.
This work plays with various shades of leather, from very dark brown through to golden brown, pale brown to light tan, culminating in light pieces of torn paper to form the sky. Texture and colour convey light, shade and distance, and the various shades and textures of leather cleverly capture the shades of western-Irish mountains in autumn light.
