Arthur Avia Buchman was a Polish painter who spent most of his working life in Northern Ireland. Escaping the war as a Jewish refugee, he worked for a box-making company in Belfast, also playing a part in the invention of the pop-up story book and flip-top cigarette box. He was an accomplished painter who was well regarded during his lifetime. However, he gained most recognition for his work many years after his death, when much of his work came up for sale in 2002 on the death of his widow.

This 'Scene in Enniskerry' (as titled on the reverse of the painting) shows a number of mature trees in the process of being felled. Somewhat apocalyptic in its style and vivid colours, it's both beautiful and tragic. The artist looks out toward the Sugarloaf mountain from somewhere near or in the Powerscourt Estate.

Gouache on board. 38 x 51cm. Signed bottom left. Reframed with acid free, conservation-grade materials and non reflective glass. Excellent condition. Original inscriptiion (1950) and title on reverse.
