A dramatic break in the clouds leads to bright shafts of golden light. The light falls across a mountain lake, most likely Donegal or north-west Ireland. The artist sits amidst boulders, looking towards the light, with a small road running along the lakeshore.
Arthur Avia Buchman was Polish painter who spent most of his working life in Northern Ireland. Escaping the war as a Jewish refugee, he worked for a box-making company in Belfast, and played a part in the invention of the pop-up story book and flip-top cigarette box. He was an accomplished painter who was well regarded in amateur and professional circles. He gained most recognition for his work many years after his death, when much of his work came up for sale in 2002 on the death of his widow.
His paintings are instantly recognisable, with characteristic bold colours and a great deal of life and movement. His work often features water, trees and bridges, and this is one of his more ambitions works.
