Arthur Power (1891-1984) was an Irish writer, art cric and visual artist. A regular visitor to James Joyce and his family in early 1920s Paris, he also associated with W.B Yeats and George Russell. He met and interbviewed Modigliani just two weeks before his (Modigliani's ) death. After returning from Paris he became the art critic for the Irish Times. From the 1950s he focussed increasingly on painting, becoming a regular exhibitor at the RHA (Royal Hibernian Academy), later becoming an honorary member.

This airy, dreamlike scene has an allegorical feel, or could be a scene from a modernist drama. A clean-lined architectural backdrop, mysterious white sheets or dresses hanging from regularly spaced trees, a tiptoeing figure moving towards them, a commodious garden bench... There is much to think about.

Pastel on paper 25x35cm. In its original limed oak frame with Dawson Gallery label on the reverse.

Like most of the artworks on this website, this piece is on display in our Clare Street shop.
