Aspidistra elatior

The Cast Iron Plant, as it is commonly known, is very worthy of its name. A very resilient plant that has the ability to look great, despite requiring very little care.

Light: This plant will do just fine in  a few different light conditions, from bright-indirect light, to that dark corner at the back of the room, so long as there is some natural light. Not tolerant of direct sunlight though, so avoid a south or west-facing window.

Water: Water regularly to keep the compost moist, but not soggy, and avoid direct sunlight. Fertilise once per month during the growing season. Water less during winter.

Air: Average room temperature is ideal, but can tolerate temps as low as 7-10ºC. Does not necessarily need increased humidity, but misting occasionally may benefit the plant.

When repotting, use a well-draining houseplant potting mix and add some perlite to increase drainage, if necessary.
