Cathy Burke, Lecanora Form 5
Cathy Burke, Lecanora Form 5
Cathy Burke is a ceramic artist who has exhibited her work worldwide, including Korea, Denmark and the UK. She is a winner of, amongst others, the Golden Fleece Special Award, Future Makers Award and Arts Council Agility Award.
Her work explores the fragile charm found in nature’s process of decay and regeneration. She explores the rugged beauty found in the cycle of decay and renewal.
Rusts and fungi are tangible indicators of decay, while mosses and lichens, which signify unpolluted air, are important indicators of a stable environment. These elements are critical to the ideas that are emulated in the glazing.
Using stoneware clay, Burke slab-builds and manipulates forms before finishing with dry, textured glazes. The endless possibilities of clay and glazing propel her to evolve and develop her processes.
