Writer, suffragist, sportswoman and artist, Edith Oenone Somerville is perhaps best known for a series of novels, written with her cousin Violet Martin, under the pseudonym 'Somerville & Ross'. The Real Charlotte was published in 1894, followed by Some Experiences of an Irish R.M in 1894.

She grew up in Castletownshend in West Cork and went on to Alexandra College in Milltown, Co Dublin. She subsequently studied art in Paris and London. She exhibited with the Watercolour Society of Ireland, at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, the Goupil Gallery and Walker’s Gallery in London, and the Ackermann Galleries in New York.  In 1943, she exhibited at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, an annual exhibitiion of 'abstract expressionism and avant-garde Irish art' that was founded that year by artist Mainie Jellett.

This fluid and skillfully executed pastel drawing captures the fleeting skies and contours of the West of Ireland. Sheep dot the middle ground, along with a shallow mountain lake. In the backgroud the mountains fade to blue. A tree and a handful of gorse bushes in the foreground suggest that the viewer has just rounded a corner and come upon this wonderful scene.

A sticker on the reverse says: Pastel drawing for her Play "A Horse, A Horse, also called Flurry's Wedding. (Circa 1920)". Appollo Gallery stamp and biographical information on reverse.
