Ellen Brown McCready, Flower Bouquet and Jug
Ellen Brown McCready, Flower Bouquet and Jug
Ellen McCready (1883-1972), known as Nellie, was born in Scotland but spent most of her adult life in Northern Ireland. Born Ellen Brown Workman, she was the daughter of a shipping magnate and later the wife of a prominent opthalmic surgeon
She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and her first exhibited work was with the Society of Women Artists (1901) and at the Royal Academy in 1903. She studied in Paris at the studio of James McNeill Whistler, and in the 1920s and 1930s she exhibited several pieces at the Paris Salon and the Fine Art Society in London. She exhibited several pieces at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in Dublin between 1927 and 1930.
Almost forgotten for many years, we are excited to have several pieces of her work for sale. An exciting and gifted artist, she was accomplished as a draughtsperson, watercolourist, oil painter and etcher. Subjects include portraits, landscapes, buildings and interiors. We have many of her beautiful sketchbooks, which we hope to exhibit in the coming months.
This watercolour painting is an atmospheric, timeless picture of garden phlox and a ladies embroidered purse. Though not dated, it most likely dates from the 1930-1940s period. Excellent condition. 53 cm x 38 cm excluding frame. Signed bottom left.
Like most of the artworks on this website, this piece is on display in our Clare Street shop.
