A fisherman fishes the Shanganagh River in Ballycorus, Co Dublin (near Kilternan) with the early 19th century lead mines chimney in the distance.Th river flows rapidly towards the sea and a fresh wind catches the leaves of the trees. Much of this landscape is now somewhere beneath the M50, N11 and Cherrywood.
Fergus O'Ryan was born in Limerick and went on to exhibit in the Royal Hibernian Academy (R.H.A.) for almost 50 years. He is best known for his landscape paintings, capturing rural, urban and suburban Ireland over many decades. He worked as a graphic designer and illustrator and during the 1950s and 1960s he was amongst Ireland's mostwell-known and best-selling artists. His work is in numerous national collections, including the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin and the Crawford Gallery in Cork.
