G. Gibson, Irish Rural Scene (1909)
G. Gibson, Irish Rural Scene (1909)
'Charming' is the best way to describe this painting. It's an unusual 'naive' scene of women picking flowers - probably roses - at the roadside, while two younger children (or a mother and child) stand on the road. Behind them is a farmhouse in the bend of the road. An indistinct landscape fades into the distance, with tree branches framing the top of the scene. The house and buildings don't automatically make you think of Ireland, but the "William Rodney, Belfast' manufacturer's stamp on the back, as well as the artist's address as 'Glendale, Dunmanway' (Co Cork) indicate that the work is Irish.
Oil on canvas. 50 x 66cm. Signed G. Gibson and dated 1909 bottom left. Some tears and repairs to the canvas, scuffing to the frame. The reverse of the frame has the words: 'G Gibson, Glendale, Dunmanway' written in pencil on the frame. Canvas stamped W. Rodney Limited, Belfast
