Jack B. Yeats RHA (1871-1957), The Wren Boys
Jack B. Yeats RHA (1871-1957), The Wren Boys
Hand coloured originalprint by the Cuala Press. It depicts the traditional Saint Stephen's Day (December 26th) celebration: four boys carry a decorated bush through the village. Footprints suggest snow, and by their open mouths we guess they are singing. Careful spots of bright colours in their clothes, decorations and the sky. The Cuala Press was established in Dublin in 1908 by Elizabeth and Lily Yeats, sisters of Jack and William Butler Yeats. This women-led and staffed press published new work by emerging Irish writers - including their brothers - and closed in 1946. This print was produced between 1908 and early 1920's.
