John Hunter RUA (1893-1951), The Roe Road
One of the less known Irish Modernist painters, John Hunter graduated from the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin in 1922 and went on to become the President of the Royal Ulster Academy. He has a clearly recognisable style, with bold outlines and rich colours. Some of his work in now in the collection of the Ulster Museum.
A play of shadows and tree silhouettes make this small oil painting a bold, graphic depiction of rural Northern Ireland in the first half of the Twentienth Century.
Oil on board 30 x 38cm. Signed bottom right. Gallery label on reverse.
