Cherry trees in bloom in a wild landscape of dry stone walls and gorse bushes, also in bloom. The dramatic mountain in the background is most certainly the Sugarloaf. Mabel Young  lived in Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow for much of her life, and Wicklow landscapes feature prominently in her work. In fact, the first work she exhibited at the RHA (1928) was entitled 'Sugar Loaf Mountain'.

A great interpreter of trees, Mabel Young painted them with movement and a feeling for each species, as well as their relationship with their neighbours. Born in England, she moved to Ireland in her mid twenties and trained under Paul Henry, whom she later married after the death of his first wife, Grace. She exhibited frequently in her lifetime, both with the Royal Hibernian Academy and in group and solo exhibitions, nationally and iternationally.
