Markey Robinson is arguably one of the most significant Irish artists of the twentieth century. His work is instantly recognisable. He is most famous for his west of Ireland landscapes, which he painted prolifically, often including traditional cottages and old, shawl-ensconced women described as 'shawlies'.
This graphic, confident work is different to much of his work, making it somewhat unique. Painted in various shades of blue and white, it ingeniously contrasts the fine printed foliage of the wallpaper with the broad, simple paintwork of the cut flowers. Perhaps it is somewhat a homage to his youth, as his father was a house painter and decorator.
