Psoralea pinnata / Blue broom / Pea shrub
Psoralea pinnata / Blue broom / Pea shrub
Unusual evergreen shrub that thrives in the Dublin area. Attractive feathery foliage and attractive lilac-blue flowers in late summer to early autumn. The flowers are perfumed of bubble gum. Suitable for a bright location in regular or even moist soil. It is native to South Africa.
Psoralea pinnata is a small to medium multi-branched shrub that can grow up to 4 metres in height. It is fast growing and able to cope with infertile soil, as it is nitrogen fixing. The flowers are attarctive to bees. Ideal as part of a planting scheme for a bright location, where it can add a screening dimension. Consider it for your front garden. As it grows quite fast, trim it back fairly hard to keep it sturdy in its early years.
Irish-grown plants are 40-60cm tall in a 3 litre container.
