Theodore James Gracey (1895 - 1959), Western Irish Landscape

A small cluster of cottages nestle amongst the folds and fields of a coastal, west of Ireland landscape. This arrangengment of buildings is characteristic of the west of Ireland. Thatched roofs, small fields, stacks of cut turf to provide warmth through the winter. Life was undoubtedly hard. For many artists of the early years of the 19th century, western Ireland, and its people, was a frequent subject matter.

Theo Gracey, like many Irish artists, started work as a commercial artist in Northern Ireland. He became a member of the Royal Ulster Academy (R.U.A.), where he exhibited. Between 1924 and 1951 he exhibited a total of 70 works to the Royal Hibernian Academy (R.H.A.) in Dublin. He is most well known for his watercolours of Donegal and Antrim in the north-west of Ireland.
