If your box plants (Buxus sempervirens) are being eaten alive by caterpillars, then you have box moth caterpillars. These non-native caterpillars can devastate your lovely box hedging or topiary in a matter of days. This problem is all over the Dublin area and no doubt spreading fast.
Luckily, there is a safe, effective and powerful treatment. 'XenTari' is a biological insecticide that is not harmful to humans nor the environment. Even natural predators of the caterpillar, such as parasitic wasps, flies, bees and mites are not affected by the product. Birds that eat or are fed caterpillars treated with XenTari will not be harmed by the product.
Start the treatment when you first see caterpillars on your plants and signs of damage. Look out for messy, sticky webs. You only need to treat 3 times per season, 1x for each caterpillar cycle.
Instructions are included on the packaging. In summary, the plants are sprayed with a solution of 1 sachet of XenTari mixed with 3 litres of water. This mixture will be sufficient for 30m2 of plants.
The first caterpillars usually appear between mid-April to late May. As soon as you see the first caterpillars, apply a treatment with XenTari as soon as possible.
The best way to determine the next 2 treatment moments is to regularly check your Boxwoodfor caterpillars. As soon as you notice new caterpillars, carry out a new treatment.
If your plants have already been pretty devastated, don't despair. Give them a good shake / rake to remove debris and dead foliage. Keep an eye out for a new infestation and then spray with XenTari. You can also give the plants a good feed with a specific box / Buxus fertiliser, also generally available in our shops.
